Custom Homes: How to Care for Your New Home

Finding your next home is a big deal.

If you're a first-time buyer or if you're a seasoned pro looking for a spot to settle in for the long-haul, finding the home that's perfect for you is never something to overlook.

Many people spend months on the market looking for a home that they want to make theirs. Though the average home buyer may spend between 30 and 60 days on the market, it could take years for others.

Why? Because those people have something specific in mind, and they may not know that they have options other than finding a house and buying it.

Structure Design Build works with people who have a vision and refuse to settle for anything less. Our high-end custom builds allow our customers to get their brand new, dream home without settling for getting a home where they like some things and dislike others.

Electing to pursue a custom build is a great step, so we've put together this helpful guide to help you care for your new home.

We build high-end custom homes in the Toronto area and love taking people through the full process. Whether you want information about what it takes to get a custom home, how long it takes, and what you can expect, Structure Design Build has all the insider info!

Custom homes: what you need to know

When it comes to custom homes, we know there's tons of information out there that can make the process seem overwhelming.

In all honesty, it is a lot of work. But that work will pay off big time once you are in your new dream home.

Structure Design Build has had the pleasure of working with incredible people to build them great homes while building our portfolio to show other clients. When working with us, you can expect great results and know that we will work to make your vision come to life.

We strive to serve our community, in both English and Chinese, to help our clients voice exactly what they are seeking in their new home.

These projects can take a few months to finalize, from drawing up ideas to you opening the doors, and you should expect to be kept up to date every step of the way.

When it comes time to decorate and make those decisions, people who have selected their custom home need to know that these decisions are up to them! Designers are great expert opinions, but no one should feel required to follow a certain trend or style.

So, now that we've gotten that quick intro to what you need to know about custom homes out of the way, let's talk about how you can care for your home.

Caring for your new home

Congratulations! All the hard work is done and you are officially the owner of your very own custom home.

So, what next? The builders are gone and you're in it for the long haul. What type of care does a custom home need after all?

We've put together this guide to help you care for your custom home and make sure that it stays in top shape for years to come so that you can continue to enjoy it.

Maintenance

One of the most important things you can do to care for your custom home is to keep up with the maintenance that a property requires.

If you notice any problems with leaks or creaky steps, it's important to address those problems. If the kids finished their crayon portrait on your wall, get out the paint and put on a fresh coat.

The more you keep up with maintenance, the easier it is to keep up with your home and maintain its charm and quality. Once things begin to slip, you may find yourself having to deal with larger problems down the road.

Maintenance also includes getting the landscaping done regularly to maintain the exterior of your home and keep an eye out for any foundational damage that could happen.

Remember to update to energy-saving equipment when possible! You'll save money and make your house more efficient.

Season-proof your home

We have beautiful seasons in Toronto, but that means prepping your home to take on the challenges that winter and spring can bring on.

As winter approaches, make sure that you are working to reduce your energy bill and keep the exterior and interior of your home safe.

This means checking that your windows and doors are sealed properly. You'll also want to check what kind of windows you have since insulation is integral during the cold season.

In the summer, you will have to look at similar parts of your home as far as windows and gaps go. However, you'll want to make sure that your air conditioning unit is in great condition to keep you comfortable and save money!

Stay updated

As people settle into their custom homes, it's expected for their style to come into the house to make it a home.

However, it's always a good thing to bring your house through the ages and keep it modern. Remember those huge, busy floral print drapes of the past? Well, those "old faux-pas" items may be missing now, but there are newer things that can date your home in the long run.

Make sure that doesn't happen to you and update finishes to your home to keep it modern and you!

Keep your home safe

One of the most important aspects of caring for your custom home comes with safety.

Make sure that you do everyday things like keep an eye out in your neighborhood, but also check that your windows and doors are locked. If you have a gate, be sure to close that on your way in at night!

Security systems are always a great idea, especially given the investment of custom homes.
